Black Arts Fest Week at Bucknell University commenced in full force with a vibrant kickoffbrunch on February 18th, 2024. Hosted by the Black Student Union (BSU), this thirteenth annual tradition brought together Black students and allies from neighboring organizations for a memorable afternoon of celebration and reflection. The event began with a stirring rendition of the Black American national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” performed on the keyboard by a talented student. This set the tone for a thought-provoking discussion on this year’s theme: “Young, Gifted, and Black” and what that means to them. Following the introduction, members of the BSU Executive Board provided a preview of the exciting events planned for the week ahead. From lectures and open mic nights to a headphone party, Fashion Show, and the highly anticipated Stomp Out performance, there was something for everyone to look forward to. Amidst delicious soul food and Sunday Cookout anthems, attendees were also treated to powerful poetry readings that tackled themes of Black excellence, police brutality, and the challenges faced with being young, gifted, and Black. The brunch served as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the Black community and set the stage for a week filled with inspiration, creativity, and cultural celebration.
