Last week, on November 8th, the Biomedical Engineering Committee, in collaboration with NSBE and SASE, hosted an international exploration event featuring a diverse array of activities. From savoring international cuisines to trying hand at a crepe-making station and crafting Chinese lanterns, attendees were in for a treat. Amidst these varied experiences was a captivating West African drumming lesson led by our skilled instructor, Urie Kline.
Through the rhythmic beats and pulsating energy of the West African drumming session, participants were immersed in a 45-minute journey that celebrated the rich cultural history of the West African diaspora. As Urie guided individuals through the intricate patterns and vibrant tones, he created an opening for many to experience the joy of working with an instrument deeply rooted in West African traditions. Furthermore, he informed participants of the history behind West African drumming, altering the activity from simply a hands-on experience to a learning experience as well.
Conclusively, the international exploration event proved to be a culmination of cultures, and the West African drumming session was a standout experience that left everyone with a deeper appreciation for the universal language of music.
This supplements what the Griot Institute strives for: fostering a creative engagement with exploring Africa and the African diaspora.
