Griot Opening Event 2026

posted on September 11, 2026

Boom boom click. My body moved with the rhythm of the beat. Different forms of drums echoed across the room. The dancers were slow and intentional with every move; each dance was telling a story. Soul in Motion is the name of the group. One of the most memorable parts is when the Director of Soul in Motion, Michael Friend, played the Kalimba; a thumb piano. With such a small instrument, he was able to fill the room. Andrea and Pam were the two dancers who brought the show to life.

The show was more than just a performance; it was a celebration of culture and community. It was great to see the different culture clubs come together and support the event. Members of BSU, BACSA, and SASA were all there, making the room feel connected and full of energy. Seeing so many students from different backgrounds in one place showed how events like this can bring people together and create a strong sense of community on campus. The wonderful students of the Arts First Pre-Orientation even opened us up with beautiful singing.

The music, dancing, and instruments made the performance exciting, but the atmosphere surrounding the show made it even more memorable. Everyone was able to enjoy themselves, connect with one another, and experience different aspects of culture through the performance. The snow cones were also a nice addition to the event and gave everyone something to enjoy while spending time together. Overall, Soul in Motion created an experience that combined music, dance, culture, and community in a way that made the show stand out to me. I will definitely get out of my seat and dance along with them next year!
