The return from spring break kicked off with the arrival of Griot Institute guest speaker, Coco Fusco, Cuban-American interdisciplinary artist and writer whose work explores topics such as gender, identity, race, and structures of power. In an informal lunch, Fusco spoke with students and faculty about her work, answering questions about everything from her research projects to performance art pieces.
Fusco’s decolonial projects were also central to the lecture series, emphasizing her convergence of personal lived experiences with artistic creation, focusing on the ways in which the body can embody and express resistance as a form of decolonial practice, especially in performance art. Later that evening, Fusco delivered a talk going more into depth on her research and art, so keep an eye out for that blog and the recording of the event.
