The Griot recently hosted their first book club discussion, reading Rest to Resistance by Tricia Hersey. The book questions the consequences of prioritizing productivity as the measure of success, critiquing the damaging pace imposed by capitalism, which mirrors historical exploitation. In this exploration, Hersey illuminates our troubled relationship with rest and envisions a world where rest is celebrated. Rejecting the notion that our worth is determined by how much we produce for an exploitative system, the act of resting becomes an act of resistance, a way to reclaim basic humanity and assert individual worthiness.
Led by one of the student interns at Griot, this event brought together faculty, staff, and students in one room as they gave their thoughts on the book and discussed what they learned from it while enjoying delicious food. Overall, the event was a great moment for people who attended to think about what rest means to them and how they can take control of it.
